What is a merchant account?

A merchant account allow businesses and individuals to process credit cards from their customers.

When a customer provides a credit card number, be it in-person, over the phone, or online, the merchant account provider oversees the processing and payment. This process and payments accrues through a merchant account. The merchant account is set up with a merchant bank and acts as a sort of agreement between the business or person accepting the card, the merchant bank, and the payment processor.

The cost to have a merchant account differs depending on many factors. Three main variables in determining cost are:
Industry Type
If the card is “swiped” on credit card equipment, accepted online or over the phone.
And how much the payment processor (merchant account provider) will charge for their services.
